Water-supply and sewerage
Water-supply
Lom is the first town after the capital Sofia in the country which has modern water-conduit. It is put into operation in 1903 after contracting with the representation of the German company Manesman for delivery of cast-iron water pipes. Until the construction of the water-conduit, 22 permanently-running natural water sources have supplied the town with water. New reservoirs and water-conduits have been constructed with the growth of the town which gradually supplied the low and high parts of the town. Presently, the town is water-supplied at 100%. The length of the total water-conduit system is 131 899 m.
Six water-supply systems with total daily capacity of the water of 212 l/sec have been constructed for the water-supply of Lom. Four systems with total capacity of 150 l/sec are active.
The water-supply system Dobridol, built in 1970-1975, is the main system for water-supply of the town of Lom which ensures 87% of the water-supply and included two pump units (working and duplicate).
The street distributing water-supply network is being constructed for many years from different pipes: cast-iron, steel, asbestos-cement, and poly-ethylene. The water-conduit is divided in three zones – low, medium and high due to the different relief (respectively different street levelling). In the North-West part of the town of Lom, the water is supplied directly in the street water-conduit network of Boruna area and the low zone of the town by two draining water intakes and pump station.
Sewerage
Lom is located over sloping terrain and high groundwater which used to cause serious problems regarding the usage of the old sewerage, not adjusted for mechanical cleaning and leading of waste and rain waters. All these problems imposed the construction of the new sewerage system – leading main sewer. The first stage with total length of 2 600 m has been constructed; it allows cleaning when needed due to its construction features. The construction has passed through three stages of execution. First stage (17.08.1998 –30.09.1999), second stage (01.10.1999 –30.09.2001) and third stage (01.10.2001 –31.12.2002). The newly-constructed sewer is of mixed type and domestic and faecal waste waters are leaded without purification in the Danube River.
The construction of Main sewer on Danube Street is necessary for the total completion of the town sewerage system as well as second and third stage of the Sewerage of Boruna area. The construction of Water-purifying Station for secondary purification of the waste waters before their leading in the water intake is needed for the improvement of the ecological condition of the Danube River.
